Steel Frame Design
Steel frames are used to provide the structural skeleton to a building. The most common types of steel frame are multi-storey braced frames and portal frames.
Multi-storey braced structures use vertical steel members for columns and horizontal members for beams at each of the floor levels. Often a series of inclined members provide the bracing for a building using this format
Portal steel frames are the most common use for steel within the UK with over 50% of all UK steel being used in this way. Often a portal frame will be most suitable for industrial buildings as this structural arrangement allows for large spans.
At Peter Cole Consultants we use the latest in structural analysis software to allow the modelling and design of structural steel frames. The software we use includes Masterseries Masterframe and CSC Fastrak. Our engineers are also experienced in the field of connection design and this can be undertaken as an additional service to the design.
