Design Brief

This is a new build Motorway Service Station constructed on a greenfield environmentally sensitive site, for Swayfields (Folkestone) Ltd, part of the Swayfields/Extra Group of Companies. The project involved the construction of a new 24/7 operational filling station with sales building, carwash and plant room, generator compound, canopy structure and an above ground reinforced concrete vaulted fuel storage facility that is covered over beneath a landscape embankment. External pavement design is included in the design brief.

Technical Info

The sales building is a steel framed structure with a total floor area of 420m², and it is built on a pre-cast concrete piled reinforced concrete raft. The carwash, plant room and generator compound are of similar construction.

The Super Vault tanks are built within an above ground reinforced concrete vault approximately 400m² in area and 4.5m high which has a PCC roof over, two access tunnels and is fully tanked to eliminate fuel escape into the ground in the event of a spill and to prevent water ingress. The entire vault is buried in the hill side and landscaped over, with a natural stone gabion wall retaining the earth to the forecourt elevation of the structure.
