Design Brief

To provide a new 3 storey classroom block upon a brownfiled site formerly used as a petrol station. Peter Cole Consultants were required to provide structural design for the proposal including below ground drainage and advice for the removal of buried fuel tanks and localised petroleum contamination.

Technical Info

Investigative works discovered the extent of contamination. The buried tanks and contaminated soils were replaced with clean stone. However the site was lying on vast quantites of fill material creating poor conditions for simple shallow foundations. The building was therefore supported on a series of piles and ground beams. The ground floor was a suspended floor slab.

The superstructure was constructed using a 3 storey steel frame with infilled masonry panels. The 1st and 2nd floor construction was a combination of two different composite floor deck systems. The steel at the roof supported a timber roof.
