Design Brief

A contract to provide a new indoor bowls centre at the recently built Shrewsbury Sports Village. The facility will consist of a modern six-rink indoor bowling green with changing accomodation and social area. The social area will include a bar and catering facilities, which will allow the facility to act not just as a sporting venue, but also a social hub for the bowlers of all disciplines.

Technical Info

The site provided us with tricky ground conditions as half of it consisted of made ground onto clays. Deep trench foundations were avoided using a vibro ground improvement technique. A concrete ground bearing floor slab was used to form the bowling surface. The steel frame was a single storey braced structure, column sizes were smaller than those that would be present if a portalised structure was used.
