Design Brief
The Yarborough Leisure Centre solar panel installation is part of a broader sustainability initiative funded by Sport England’s Swimming Pool Support Fund Phase Two. The project aims to improve energy efficiency, reduce carbon emissions, and lower operational costs while supporting the UK government’s Net Zero by 2050 objective.
Technical Information
A total of 284 high-performance photovoltaic panels have been installed on the centre’s roof, capable of generating approximately 89,258 kWh of renewable energy annually. The project also includes upgrades to the centre’s Air Handling Unit to further improve energy efficiency.
PCC Consultants Ltd conducted a detailed structural assessment to evaluate the roof's capacity for additional loads from the PV system. The structural analysis, undertaken using Eurocode standards and validated by site inspections in August 2024, confirmed that the existing steel truss roof could support the new solar panels with minimal reinforcements.
Environmental Focus
This project exemplifies sustainable engineering by integrating renewable energy solutions into community infrastructure.
The benefits include:
-
A projected reduction of 20,979kg of CO2 emissions per year
-
Estimated annual energy cost savings of £17,000
-
Improved air handling efficiency, reducing overall energy demand
By implementing this green initiative, Yarborough Leisure Centre is setting a precedent for similar facilities across the UK, demonstrating the financial and environmental benefits of renewable energy integration.
